Applications of Photodynamic Therapy in Pediatric Dentistry
Abstract
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment modality that utilizes the interaction of a photosensitizer, light of an appropriate wavelength, and oxygen to produce reactive oxygen species that inactivate microorganisms. In pediatric dentistry, PDT has gained increasing attention due to rising antibiotic resistance, the need to avoid invasive procedures, and limitations in biofilm control. The aim of this review is to evaluate the current applications of PDT in pediatric dentistry and its contributions to clinical practice. Evidence from clinical and in vitro studies demonstrates that PDT can be effective in the management of carious lesions, enhancement of restorative procedures, improvement of bonding strength in hypoplastic teeth, and removal of black stains. Furthermore, its minimally invasive nature facilitates patient cooperation in children and offers an adjunctive option to conventional treatments. However, further research is needed to standardize clinical protocols, assess long-term outcomes, and validate findings through larger-scale trials.
