The Effect of Common Beverages and Denture Cleansing Agents on the Color Stability and Whiteness Index of Acrylic Denture Teeth: An In Vitro Study
Abstract
Background: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the staining effects of common beverages, specifically tea and coffee, on the color stability and whiteness index of acrylic denture teeth. Additionally, it sought to assess the effectiveness of two different denture cleaning agents in vitro.
Materials and Methods: Forty denture teeth (maxillary central incisors) were divided into two groups (n=20) and then kept in distilled water as a control group. The denture teeth were immersed in tea and coffee solutions for one month. Afterward, the specimens were cleaned using either a Corega effervescent tablet or sodium hypochlorite. A digital spectrophotometer was used for color measurement. Color changes and the whiteness index were assessed at baseline, after soaking in beverages, and following the use of a denture cleansing agent. Statistical analysis was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s HSD post-hoc test (p<0.05).
Results: Both beverages negatively affect the color stability and whiteness of denture teeth. Coffee causes more staining (7.22±1.34) and greater loss of whiteness (-3.53±1.56) compared to tea. Both cleansers significantly reduce discoloration. Corega tablets are more effective in reducing color change and enhancing whitening compared to sodium hypochlorite.
Conclusions: The coffee and tea significantly affect the color and whiteness of denture teeth, with coffee having the most notable impact. Among the cleansers tested, Corega tablets were found to be more effective than sodium hypochlorite in reversing discoloration and improving whiteness.
