Design and Implementation of an Economical and Energy Efficient DC Light Bulb with High-Power Leds

Abstract

This study presents the design and development of a cost-effective and energy-efficient direct current (DC) light bulb utilizing high-power light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The motivation arises from the growing demand for sustainable and affordable lighting solutions, particularly in off-grid and renewable energy systems where DC power sources are predominant. The system operates on a 12V DC supply, making it well-suited for solar-powered and battery-based applications, and incorporates a custom-designed constant current driver circuit to ensure stable and efficient LED performance. The developed system replaces conventional alternating current (AC)-based lighting with a DC alternative that minimizes energy losses typically associated with AC-to-DC conversion. Key design features include optimal selection and arrangement of high-power LEDs, effective thermal management for prolonged lifespan, and a low-cost driver circuit that guarantees consistent illumination and high efficiency. The prototype achieved high luminous efficacy with power consumption slightly above five (5) watts, surpassing many traditional AC LED bulbs. The results confirm that the DC LED bulb is not only technically feasible but also economically viable for deployment in energy-constrained and remote areas. It demonstrates significant energy savings and reliable performance, validating the proposed design as a practical solution for low-cost, high-efficiency lighting in both rural and urban environments. The findings contribute to ongoing efforts to promote green technologies and improve energy access through advanced DC lighting systems. Furthermore, the overall component cost was considerably lower, highlighting the economic advantage of the proposed approach.
