Visualization of Sea Level Rise with Spatial Analysis for A Future Scenario of Istanbul

Year 2025, Volume: 12 Issue: 2, 12 - 24, 30.06.2025

Abstract

Recently, statistics on earth’s surface temperature point toward high record temperatures that lead to Sea Level Rise (SLR) and degradation of land surface area. These situations cause other spatial objects (land and marine properties) to be affected by changes in their physical properties (including geometries and locations). Thus, this paper attempts to investigate various aspects related to land and marine spatial objects/properties with respect to qualitative analyses of SLR together with visualization using the city of Istanbul as a case study. This paper also discusses a brief experiment utilizing the Multi Error Removed Improved Terrain Digital Elevation Model (MERIT DEM), existing building footprints, simulated bathymetry, and land use datasets. The experiment reveals the prediction of the SLR according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report. Additionally, in this article, the aim is to serve as a reference for near future research in the context of geospatial components, SLR and Land Administration Area Model (LADM) as object modelling tools.
