RENEWABLE ENERGY ARTVIN PROVINCE HES PROJECTS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS

Abstract

Renewable Energy aims to produce energy by using clean energy sources. In this context, a study was conducted in the Çoruh Basin in Artvin Province, which has an important water basin in our country. With this study, River Type HEPP projects in Artvin Province were examined and their support to the energy production of our country and their environmental impacts were evaluated. The general structures of HEPP projects, which are clean energy sources, were analyzed and their energy potential and their importance in energy production were stated. Within the borders of Artvin, a total of 5 Dam Type HEPP and 30 River Type HEPP projects are in operation. The total energy production of these River HEPP projects is 1.370,107 GWh and has a total installed capacity of 441,366 MW. These projects also have some negative environmental impacts in all processes from the construction phase to the operation phase. For this reason, it is necessary to eliminate the negative effects of Hydro Energy, which is a renewable energy source, on the environment and to operate at a level that will not harm natural life, aquatic life and the people of the region. In this context, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports should be meticulously planned and implemented, and the life water to be released into the river bed should be sufficient and should not adversely affect aquatic and natural life. In this context, Artvin province is a region with regionally rich water resources thanks to the Çoruh River. Therefore, it has a strategic location where HEPP projects are concentrated, making a significant national contribution to the national economy and creating employment. For this reason, Artvin, which has HEPP projects intertwined with the environment, natural beauties and contributes to tourism, has an important place for our country's domestic energy resources. In this study, the contribution of Artvin HEPP projects to energy production and their positive/negative environmental impacts were revealed.
