Examining the Flood risk potentials of the riverine community of Anegbette in Edo State, Nigeria
Abstract
Flood is a high water level that overflows the natural land levels along any portion of a stream covering land that was usually dry and beyond its banks. This research aims at examining the flood risk potentials of the riverine community of Anegbette, Nigeria. Gumbel, Log Normal and Log Pearson Type III distributions were used in the flood discharge analysis. It was also identified that flood discharge for return periods of 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 200 years will inundate a surface area of approximately 984658.3m2, 27352629.3m2, 68945362m2, 120077701.8m2, 141317502.2m2, 159030378.9m2 and 174705880.4m2 respectively in Anegbette. Magnitude of flood discharges for return periods of 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, 25 years, 50 years, 100 years and 200 years are 16,990.26m3/s, 21,159.94m3/s, 23,731.35m3/s, 26,817.19m3/s, 29,021.03m3/s, 31,153.24m3/s, 33,250.88m3/s respectively. ArcGIS – 10.1 was used to delineate the watershed, the output showed that the topography of the community varies from 16m to 140m, the networks of rivers covering the entire watersheds were modeled in ArcGIS – ArcInfo 10 software using the digital elevation model data of the terrain. Highlands are mainly in the South – western part of Anegbette thus water drains from west to east towards River Niger.
