The Contribution of an Environmental Documentary Movie on the Development of Vocabulary of Turkish Language Learners: Home Documentary

Abstract

The current study, which investigates the contribution of environment-themed documentary films to the vocabulary development of students learning Turkish as a foreign language, is an experimental and quantitative (survey research) research. This study aims to determine the effect of watching aforementioned type of documentary on the development of students’ vocabulary learning in the scope of environment in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. The sample group of the study consists of preparatory class students learning Turkish at Bursa Uludağ University Turkish Teaching Research and Application Center (ULUTÖMER). The vocabulary content of this study is based on the words in the scenario of environment-themed documentary film called “Home” by Arthus-Bertrand (2009). The utilized words which were adapted in a compatible way with B2 level and related CEFR (The Common European Framework of Reference) learning outcomes were applied as a vocabulary test. The data were collected with the "Vocabulary Test" questionnaire form applied to the students learning Turkish at ULUTÖMER in the fall semester of 2020-2021. The collected data were analyzed with quantitative data analysis methods and probable differences between pre-post-vocabulary tests were determined. Then, by conducting Paired-sample's t-test between the pre-post-tests’ averages, the contribution of environment –themed documentary films on the development of language skills, daily and related vocabulary development of those learning Turkish as a foreign language was determined. The results indicate that environment-themed documentary films contribute positively to the development of students' vocabulary learning within the context of everyday life and environment theme.

Çevre İçerikli Belgesel Filmlerin Yabancı Dil Olarak Türkçe Öğrenen Öğrencilerin Sözcük Dağarcığı Gelişimine Katkısı Yuva Belgeseli Örneği -

Öz

Çevre içerikli belgesel filmlerin yabancı dil olarak Türkçe öğrenen öğrencilerin sözcük dağarcığı gelişimine katkısının belirlenmesine yönelik sorulara cevap arandığı bu çalışma, deneysel ve nicel desende bir tarama araştırmasıdır. Çalışmanın amacı, yabancı dil olarak Türkçe öğretiminde çevre konulu belgesel izletmenin öğrencilerin çevreyle ilgili sözcük dağarcıklarını geliştirmesine etkisini tespit etmektir. Çalışmanın evrenini Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi Türkçe Öğretimi Uygulama ve Araştırma Merkezi'nde (ULUTÖMER) Türkçe öğrenen hazırlık sınıfı öğrencileri oluşturmaktadır. Bu çalışmada materyal olarak Arthus-Bertrand'ın (2009) “Yuva” isimli çevre belgesel filminin senaryosunda yer alan sözcükler kullanılmıştır. Kullanılan sözcükler -DİAOÖÇ (Diller İçin Avrupa Ortak Öneriler Çerçevesi) B2 düzeyi kazanımlarına uygun olacak biçimde- B2 düzeyine uyarlanarak sözcük dağarcığı testi şeklinde uygulanmıştır. Veriler 2020-2021 güz döneminde ULUTÖMER’de Türkçe öğrenen öğrencilere uygulanan “Sözcük Dağarcığı Testi” formu ölçeğiyle toplanmıştır. Toplanan veriler nicel veri analiz yöntemleriyle analiz edilerek ön ve son sözcük dağarcığı testleri arasındaki olası farklılıklar belirlenmiştir. Belirlenen farklılıkların ortalamasının, öğrencilerin çevresel sözcük dağarcığı gelişimine katkı sağlayıp sağlamadığını ortaya koymak için ön-son test arasında bağımlı gruplar t - testi (paired-sample’s t-testi) yapılmıştır. Sonuç olarak çevre belgesel filmlerinin öğrencilerin günlük ve çevre sözcük dağarcıklarının gelişimine olumlu katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir.
