Examining the Impact of Quizlet on Vocabulary Learning in Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language

Abstract

This study examines the pedagogical role of Quizlet-supported vocabulary instruction in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. Using a quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test design, the study was conducted with 76 B1-level learners enrolled in a Turkish as a Foreign Language program at a public university in Türkiye. Participants were assigned to an experimental group, which received Quizlet-supported vocabulary instruction, and a control group, which followed textbook-based instruction over a five-week period. Vocabulary knowledge was measured using a researcher-developed achievement test administered before and after the intervention. The findings indicate that both the experimental and control groups demonstrated statistically significant improvements in vocabulary knowledge over the instructional period. However, no statistically significant difference was found between the post-test performances of the two groups. These results suggest that vocabulary development was influenced by multiple instructional factors, including structured classroom instruction and sustained practice, rather than by the use of a single technological tool alone. From a pedagogical perspective, the findings highlight that Quizlet can function as a supportive and complementary tool for vocabulary learning when integrated into structured instructional contexts. The study contributes to research on technology-enhanced language learning by emphasizing the importance of pedagogical design and contextual factors in shaping learning outcomes in foreign language vocabulary instruction.
