The Effect Of Technology On 7-9 Year-Old Children’s Pictures

Abstract

Today, rapidly advancing technological developments, especially the increase in the diversity of mass media continue to increase their importance in our lives by causing changes in almost every field. One of the most important issues we need to pay attention to, while technology has entered our lives to this extend, is how children are affected by these developments. One of the most effective ways for the child to express his feelings and thoughts is painting. Painting is of great importance as a means of expression for the child to reflect himself and express his feelings and thoughts about events. The pictures that the children made are an indication of their wishes, fears and joys; the messages of these pictures, when analyzed correctly, can give us important information about their progress. For this reason, we can say that painting is the expression of her world in which the child tries to make sense of herself and the indicator of her mental development. There are many factors that affect the linear development of children. These factors, as internal and external factors, are very effective in human behavior and physical and mental development. In parallel with the physical and mental development of the child, a marked change is observed in their linear development. One of the most important periods of these changes is the 7-9 age range. At the age of 7-8, a visible change is noticed in the pictures of the child. Because the child has now met the school, the first social institution in his life. School period means a brand new life for the child and one of the important steps in her development. Starting school is to enter a new and complex social environment, to take part in the society as an individual, to open up to the outside world. During this period, the child's scheme starts to get rich. In the pictures of children who are mentally in the concrete processing step, the real color of the object begins to be seen, concrete objects and events are tried to be reflected as they are in their paintings, children feel the desire to show their pictures and get an idea. The effect of visual communication tools is important in enriching children's image worlds and recognizing objects and living things. When used effectively, developments in technology make important contributions to the teaching of every field. When examining the effects of using and not using technology on the pictorial development of the child, it is important to determine what the negative reasons are and try to eliminate the negativities. From this point of view, in the study, the pictures made by children aged 7-9 who benefit from technology and cannot benefit from it are examined, and how technology is reflected in children's pictures has been revealed. In the research, it is aimed to determine whether technology affects the pictures of children meaningly or not and -if it affects- to determine to what extent these effects exist, by evaluating the pictures made by the 7-9-year-old children who were grown up in families whose socio-economic levels are different and the children who don’t benefit from technology on equal basis, in the direction of picture evaluation criteria which are made up by considering the distinctive features of their own terms. Nevertheless, with the questionnaire developed within the scope of the research, the differences between the games played most, the modes of communication, the time they watch television, the types of the programs they watch most on television, and the duration of computer use of the children between the ages of 7-9, who live in cities and villages and whose ways and rates of benefitting from technology differ from were revealed. The research was made up with descriptive methods by using model of scanning. Firstly, a survey which was prepared by considering both the age group of children and an expert opinion was carried out to 7-9-year-old children with the aim of determining their socio-economic levels. Then, the children were made to draw pictures related with “game” and “communication” by considering an expert opinion again. The pictures of children were evaluated with “Picture Evaluating Scale” which was prepared with the help of expert opinion. SPSS 15 (Statistical Packet Program For Social Sciences) was used for analysis of data collected in the scape of research. The 7-9 age group, 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders in primary school from Erzurum Province constitute the population of the research and 30 students from 7-9 age group studying in the Sabancı Primary Education School and 30 students from 7-9 age group studying in the Ügümü Primary School -totally 60 students- constitute the sample of the study. In consequence of the research, the effects of technology on children’s drawings were revealed and it was determined that technology has positive effects on children.
