A Look at the Theme of Motherhood in Contemporary Painting in the Context of Art and Experience: Jenny Saville

Abstract

This paper explores motherhood-themed paintings by the British artist Jenny Saville, who is known as contemporary figurative artist. Based on the idea that the concept of motherhood still continues to be a relevant issue, this paper focuses on the personal experience realm of motherhood within the framework of Saville's original artistic style. The phenomenon of motherhood, which Saville herself has experienced, changed the content of the artist's works and changed her art practice. In Saville's paintings, motherhood experience, which is closely related to the sense of self of the woman, also highlights interpersonal communication. The phenomenon of the other is expressed in all its reality through the relationships the mother establishes with her children. This article supports the hypothesis that content in the art of painting is closely related to personal experiences. The conceptual framework of the article is based on John Dewey's thoughts about art, who in Turkey has been widely acclaimed for his thoughts on the philosophy of education. In the article, based on John Dewey's experience and art approach, the value of personal experience and the subjective world of the artist in the formation of the art work is brought up again. Additionally, the article suggests that for an artist the experience of motherhood, contrary to the established perception, can be an element that enriches and nurtures art and life, rather than being a restrictive or obstructing element. As a result, it can be said that with the works analyzed in the article Saville questions the concept of subjectivity, and draws attention to the relationship between the identity problem of women and motherhood. These studies raise awareness in the audience, and develop a discourse that there may be different definitions of motherhood. In this context, article aims to contribute to the few studies in the art of painting, both applied and theoretical, that deal with the theme of motherhood which has been examined mostly in the context of sociology.
