THE TURKS FROM THE EYES OF RALPH OF CAEN: THE FIRST CRUSADE

Abstract

This study investigates the First Crusaders’ perceptions of the Turks from the eyes of an eyewithness Ralph of Caen. The study analyses the perspectives of his work: the Gesta Tancredi and how the crusaders underlined the ‘otherness’ of the Turks. The first part of the study briefly explains the life of Ralph of Caen. The second part investigates the brief biography of Tancred as he was central in the work under consideration as well as he was the patron and the commander of Ralph of Caen in the First Crusade. Then this study analyses in what ways the work in question underlines the otherness of the Turks and how the heroic deeds of the crusader forces are showed.

CAEN’Lİ RALPH’IN GÖZÜNDEN TÜRKLER: BİRİNCİ HAÇLI SEFERİ

Öz

Bu çalışma Caen bölgesinden Ralph isimli bir vakanüvisin The Gesta Tancredi isimli eserinin gözünden birinci Haçlı Seferini ve yazarın bakış açısından Türkleri ötekileştirme sürecini incelemektedir. Çalışmanın ilk bölümü Caen’li Ralph’ın kısa hayatını incelemektedir. İkinci bölüm eserde merkezi bir rol oynaması bakımından Caen’in patronu ve Birinci Haçlı Seferindeki komutanı Tancred’in kısa biyografisini içermektedir. Daha sonra eserin Türkleri düşman olarak ötekileştirme ve Haçlı kuvvetlerinin kahramanlık ülküsünün ön plana çıkarılması irdelenmektedir. Ralph eserini yazarken öncelikle patronu Tancred’in ülkesindeki siyasi prestijini arttırmayı hedeflemektedir.
