Developing Environmental Citizenship in Social Studies Through Social Media-Supported Out-of-School Learning: An Action Research

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to develop the environmental citizenship competencies of sixth-grade students in social studies courses through the use of out-of-school learning environments and social media tools. The study employed an action research design. The study group consisted of sixthgrade students enrolled in a middle school in Kocaeli, Türkiye. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, focus group interviews, student journals, and researcher journals. The data were analyzed using content analysis. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the use of social media tools and out-of-school learning environments in social studies courses supported students' active participation in learning processes and provided them with meaningful educational experiences connected to their daily lives. In particular, the integration of the school's social and physical environment into the course contributed to creating sustainable effects on students' environmental awareness. Overall, when the implemented activities are considered as a whole, the findings suggest that they contributed to the development of students' environmental citizenship competencies, particularly by fostering a shift from individual action to collective engagement

Sosyal Medya Destekli Okul Dışı Öğrenme Yöntemleriyle Ortaokul Öğrencilerinin Çevresel Vatandaşlık Yeterliklerinin Geliştirilmesi: Bir Eylem Araştırması

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın temel amacı, okul dışı öğrenme ortamları ve medya araçları kullanılarak sosyal bilgiler derslerinde altıncı sınıf öğrencilerinin çevresel vatandaşlık yeterliklerini geliştirmektir. Çalışmada eylem araştırması yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Çalışma grubu, 2021-2022 akademik yılında Kocaeli ilinde bir ortaokulda öğrenim gören altıncı sınıf öğrencilerinden oluşmuştur. Veri toplama araçları olarak yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler, odak grup tartışmaları, öğrenci ve araştırmacı günlükleri kullanılmış ve verilerin analizinde içerik analizi yöntemi uygulanmıştır. Araştırmada elde edilen verilere dayanarak, sosyal bilgiler derslerinde medya araçlarına ve okul dışı öğrenme ortamlarına dayalı etkinliklerin, öğrencilerin aktif öğrenme süreçlerine katılmalarını sağladığı ve onlara günlük yaşamla ilgili anlamlı eğitim deneyimleri sunduğu söylenebilir. Özellikle, okulun sosyal ve fiziksel ortamının derse entegrasyonu, öğrenciler arasında çevre bilinci açısından sürdürülebilir etkiler yaratmıştır. Sonuç olarak, gerçekleştirilen etkinlikler bir bütün olarak incelendiğinde, özellikle bireycilikten kolektivizme geçiş bağlamında, öğrencilerin çevre bilinci yeterliliklerinin geliştirilmesine katkıda bulunduğu söylenebilir.
