Determination of Concentrations of Lead and Nickel in Keban Dam Lake (Elazığ) within Water Framework Directive
Abstract
Keban Dam Lake is the biggest artificial lake after Atatürk Dam Lake. The length of Keban Dam Lake along Murat River Valley is 125 km and the width changes somewhere. Aquaculture is made in Keban Dam Lake. At the same time, water is taken to the settlements located around the lake for drinking and irrigation purposes. In this study, lead and nickel which situate in the Water Framework Directive priority substances list are determined in the surface water samples taken seasonally (spring, summer, autumn and winter) from the 6 different point of Elazığ Keban Dam Lake in year 2015. Mean lead concentration is determined as 0.32 µg L-1 and mean nickel concentration is determined as 4.51 µg L-1 in Keban Dam Lake. Lead concentrations determined in the sampling points followed the increasing order of Fatmalı Village<Gülüşkür Bridge<Çemişgezek Ferry Pier<Pertek Ferry Pier<Eyüpbağları Pumping Station<Ağın Ferry Pier and nickel concentrations followed the order of Pertek Ferry Pier<Ağın Ferry Pier<Fatmalı Village<Gülüşkür Bridge<Çemişgezek Ferry Pier<Eyüpbağları Pumping Station. It is determined that nickel concentrations in the surface water samples taken from the various points of Elazığ Keban Dam Lake were higher than the lead concentrations. In the Surface Water Quality Regulation mean yearly environmental quality standard of lead and nickel concentrations is situated as 1.2 µg L-1 for lead and 4 µg L-1 for nickel. When these values are taken into consideration, it was determined that lead concentrations were under the limit value and nickel concentrations were over the limit value.
