‘ORLAN’ WITH HIS EXTRAORDINARY PERFORMANCES WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF SOCIAL SEXUALITY IN ART
Abstract
The art of Performance, which attracted
attention with its interdisciplines characteristics in the second half of the
20th century and was started to be accepted as a style in its own right in
1970s, has come to order under the various headings such as ‘Body Art’,
‘Happening’ and ‘Action’; and it has been applied within the different
movements such as ‘Fluxus’, ‘Feminist Art’ and ‘Land Art’. (Antmen, 2008:219).
It is possible to see the psychoanalysis
tecniques, which tries to transform the indivudals into the harmonical
individuals with the society by debugging them from emotional extremities,
especially katharsisi in the activities of the body artists. Body artists
perform their activities by betraying the shock element and they aim to have
the viewers to think again on the certain concepts. ‘The body’, which is tried
to be built up perfectly in the consumption culture, is exposed to the
activities that include violence such as
burning, cutting and hitting in the performances of the body artists.
Orlan has a different place in the ‘Body
Art’ than the other artists. In her performances, which are carried out by local
anaesthetic, Orlan, shapes out her body and especially her face with a sequence
of aesthetic operations in order to criticize the establishment of the female
subject in the modern society.
The body in the works of Orlan has been
opened to a social argument by being formed completely under the care of the
artist by losing its characteristic of inalterableness or convertibility in
accordance with the accepted style.
Orlan’s performances, in which the body is
used as a tool of narration, are questioning the concepts such as individual
rights, self-control, freedom limits, life-art, audience-artist while they are
defining the woman body, beauty, identity and pain concept again.
Social sexuality and violence tendency
against to the body, which are going to be dealt with the Orlan’s art, compose
the main lines of the work.
