Kelime Çağrışım Testi ve Bilişsel Haritalama Tekniğinin Görgül Bir Çalışma Üzerinden İncelenmesi: Van Yüzüncü Yıl Üniversitesi Zeve Kampüsü

Abstract

Kelime çağrışım testi ve bilişsel haritalama tekniği sosyal bilimlerde sıklıkla kullanılan araştırma teknikleri arasındadır. Bu çalışmada nitel yöntemlerde postpozitivist yaklaşımda ele alınabilecek bu iki araştırma tekniğinin görgül bir araştırma üzerinden değerlendirilmesi hedeflenmektedir. Bu kapsamda 130 üniversite öğrencisinin üniversite kampüsüne dair çağrışımları ve bilişsel haritaları, sırasıyla kelime çağrışım testi ve bilişsel haritalama tekniği ile incelenmiştir. Kelime çağrışım testi verileri IRAMUTEQ programı aracılığıyla prototip analizi ve benzerlik analizine; bilişsel haritalama sürecinden elde edilen veriler ise bilişsel haritaların çözümlenmesine tabi tutulmuştur. Her iki teknikten elde edilen sonuçlar yurtlar, sahil, fakülteler ve hastane gibi mekânların ortak bir şekilde vurgulandığını göstermektedir. Kelime çağrışım testi, kampüsün büyüklüğü, Van Gölü, sosyal ilişkiler ve kampüsle ilgili sorunları vurgularken, bilişsel haritalarda kampüs yolları, otobüs durakları, yemekhane, üniversite girişi ve Alle Yolu gibi öğeler belirgin hâle gelmiştir. Sonuçlar bu iki tekniğin bir arada kullanılmasının araştırma konusuna dair sözel ve görsel dillere ilişkin bütünsel bir perspektif sunmaya son derece yardımcı olduğunu göstermektedir. Ayrıca her iki tekniğin biliş ve duygulanıma ilişkin kapsamlı bilgiler yanı sıra temsil nesnesine dair deneyimlerin doğrudan ya da dolaylı ipuçlarını sunduğu gözlenmiştir. Kelime çağrışım testi katılımcıların temsil nesnesiyle nasıl ilişki kurduklarını ve temsil nesnesine dair anlayışlarını inşa etmek için neleri seçtiklerini ortaya koyarken; bilişsel haritalar temsil nesnesinin belirli yanlarının nasıl önceliklendirildiğini anlamaya olanak tanımaktadır.

Investigation of Word Association Test and Cognitive Mapping Technique Through an Empirical Study: Van Yüzüncü Yıl University Zeve Campus

Abstract

The word association test and cognitive mapping technique are among the research techniques widely used in the social sciences. This study aims to evaluate these two research techniques, which fall under the postpositivist approach to qualitative methods, through an empirical study. This study used the word association test and the cognitive mapping technique, respectively, to analyze the associations and cognitive maps of 130 undergraduate students. We subjected the data from the word association test to prototype and similarity analysis through IRAMUTEQ, and analyzed the cognitive maps obtained from the cognitive mapping process. The results from both techniques consistently highlight key locations such as dormitories, the beach, faculties, and the hospital. The word association test emphasized aspects like the size of the campus, Lake Van, social relations, and campus-related issues. In contrast, the cognitive maps focused on different features, including campus roads, bus stops, the dining hall, the university entrance, and Alle Road. The results showed that the combination of these two techniques is extremely helpful in providing a holistic perspective of the research topic in relation to verbal and visual languages. We also observed that both techniques provide comprehensive information about cognition and affect, as well as direct or indirect cues of experience with the representation object. The word association test reveals how participants relate to the representation object and how they construct their understanding of it, while cognitive maps help us understand the prioritization of certain aspects of the representation object.
