Abstract

The Relationship Between Grandparental Closeness and Children’s Life Satisfaction, Self-Esteem, and Bullying

Abstract

The aim of the study was to explore the relationship between grandparental closeness, satisfaction with life, self-esteem and bullying behaviours in children. The data for the study were collected using face-to-face and online questionnaires. The data for this cross-sectional quantitative study were collected through the administration of face-to-face and online questionnaires. The study population comprised 132 (12.6 ± 0.8 years) secondary school students from the Fethiye and Köyceğiz districts of Muğla. Data was collected using instruments such as descriptive data form, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Bullying Scale and Life Satisfaction Scale. The data of the study were analysed with Pearson and Spearman's correlation tests. Approximately 38% of the children participating in the study identified their maternal-grandmother as their primary grandparent. As the duration of living in the same house with grandparents increases, children's self-esteem increases and the level of victimisation decreases. There is a positive relationship between the frequency of contact with the grandparent, the degree of the relationship, the number of activities done together and the importance given to the grandparent and the life satisfaction of the children. In addition, as the duration of care received from grandparents increases, children's bullying behaviours decrease, and as the frequency of face-to-face contact and shared activities increase, children's victimisation behaviours decrease. Consequently, it can be concluded that the presence of a close relationship with grandparents is a significant contributing factor to children's psychosocial development.
