The aim of this study is to
discuss thoroughly the development of service trade in the world and Turkey
with liberalization world trade. In this study where the world service trade in
Turkey and the other countries were investigated, the service sector export and
import data of the World Trade Organization, Turkey Statistical Institute and
Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey between the years 1985-2017 were
reviewed. As a result, service trade of Turkey has many advantages in terms of
knowledge, technology, human capital, and implements. Also, it has been
observed that the tourism and transportation sectors have a high capacity and
efficiency in Turkey. According to data collected in 2017, the tourism sector
has met the requirements of revenue of service trade for almost 51% in Turkey. In
terms of service trade in Turkey, the second important leading sector is
transportation. It was the second sector providing the highest foreign currency
income with approximately 35% percent of service trade in 2017.
Generally, in order to balance Turkey's foreign trade deficit and current
account deficits, it has been tried to be financed mainly by foreign exchange
revenues obtained from service sectors such as tourism, transportation and
construction. To further improve Turkey’s share in international service trade,
potential new sub-sectors should be included in the sectors where the
traditional competitiveness is available, and more work should be concentrated
in these areas.
