Mass Media: The Image, Role, and Social Conditions of Women: A collection and analysis of research materials

Abstract

The question of culture undoubtedly remains one of the most debated
issues in the scientific exploration of the relationship
between mass media and society.
controversy between critical media sociologists ,
who emphasize the value-producing function of mass
media, and empirics, who are foremost interested
in demonstrating how social reality is reflected in
mass media, seems to have subsided in recent
years, resulting in a compromise integrating both
approaches. Much of the empirical research of the
past decade points indeed in the direction of a creative,
reinforcing or transforming cultural impact
of mass media
