Is The Military Career A Choice or A Necessity? A Study on Officers Graduating From Higher Education Institutions In The Field Of Sports Sciences

Abstract

This research aims to determine whether the choice or necessity of sports science graduates pursuing a career as an officer is a matter of preference or obligation. The research was evaluated using a phenomenological research design, one of the qualitative research methods, and data was collected through interviews. Data were collected through a Personal Information Form and a Semi-Structured Interview Form. The maximum diversity sampling method, a type of purposeful sampling, was used in the research, and interviews were conducted with 16 officers (9 men, 7 women). Data analysis was performed using content analysis methodology, and MAXQDA 24.9 program was used for the analysis. In conclusion, it has been determined that sports science graduates consciously choose the officer profession, that the officer profession has its challenges but its advantages are more influential in their decision to pursue it, and that having a sports background and being a sports science graduate is very important in terms of their adaptation to the officer profession and contributes to their professional success. In this regard, it is proposed that special quotas be created for the employment of individuals graduating from the field of sports sciences in the officer profession, and that the number of sports science graduates with a sports background be increased within the Turkish Armed Forces in terms of the performance of the officer profession.
