A BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF STUDIES RELATED TO THE CONCEPT OF SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT

Abstract

Purpose: In this study, it is aimed to examine the conceptual structure and trends of the related research field by analyzing the studies on school engagement with bibliometric methods. In this context, the research is based on mapping these studies by analyzing the studies conducted in the related field.
Design & Methodology: The data source of the research consists of 421 articles included in the research as a result of the search in the Web of Science (WoS) database. The purpose of the research is to provide information about the place of the concept of school engagement. In this context, bibliometric methodology was applied in the research. As a matter of fact, the WoS Core Collection database was searched using the subject headings or conjunctions "school engagement" and "commitment to school" determined by the researcher and field experts. The research documents were limited to articles. As a result of the search, a total of 1,707 articles were obtained. The articles obtained are studies conducted in all fields. Therefore, only 421 articles published in the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) index from the Web of Science indexes were evaluated. The analysis of the research was conducted through the R.4.1 program.
Findings: The results of the study show that the journal "Journal of school Health" has the highest number of articles by years, Wang, M. has the highest number of citations, and the authors of the most studies work at Virginia University. In addition, it was also seen that although the most studies were conducted in the USA and the most cited country was the USA, the annual citations received in the Netherlands were higher than in the USA, although the number of publications was less. Finally, when the words used in the subject were analyzed, it was seen that the word "quality" emerged the most.
Implications & Suggestions: In the light of all the findings, it is a study that will serve as a resource for researchers working on school engagement both in terms of providing documents that will guide the researcher before starting their research and in terms of seeing the deficiencies in the whole process of the research.

Okul Bağlılığı Kavramı İle İlgili Yapılmış Olan Çalışmaların Bibliyometrik Analizi

Abstract

Amaç: Bu araştırmada, okula bağlılık üzerine yapılan çalışmaların bibliyometrik yöntemlerle analiz edilerek ilgili araştırma alanının kavramsal yapısını ve eğilimlerini incelemek amaçlanmıştır. Bu bağlamda araştırma, ilgili alanda yapılan çalışmaların incelenerek bu araştırmaların bir haritasını çıkarma üzerine kurulmaktadır.
Yöntem: Araştırmanın veri kaynağını, Web of Science (WoS) veri tabanında yapılan tarama sonucu araştırmaya dâhil edilen 421 makale oluşturmaktadır. Araştırma amacı gereği okula bağlılık kavramının yeri hakkında bilgi sağlamaktır. Bu kapsamda araştırmada, bibliyometrik metodoloji uygulanmıştır. Nitekim WoS Core Collection veri tabanında, araştırmacı ve alan uzmanları tarafından belirlenen “school engagement” ve “commitment to school” konu başlıkları veya bağlaçları kullanılarak arama yapılmıştır. Yapılan araştırma dokümanları makaleler ile sınırlandırılmıştır. Tarama neticesinde toplamda 1.707 makalede elde edilmiştir. Elde edilen makaleler, tüm alanlarda yapılmış çalışmalardır. Bu yüzden Web of Science indekslerinden sadece Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) indeksinde yayınlanan 421 makale değerlendirmeye alınmıştır. Araştırmanın analizleri ise R.4.1 programı üzerinden yürütülmüştür.
Bulgular: Araştırma sonuçları; yıllara göre en çok makaleye yer veren derginin “Journal of school Health” dergisi olduğu, en fazla atıf alan Wang, M. olduğu, en fazla çalışmayı yapan yazarların Virginia University de çalıştığını göstermektedir. Ayrıca en çok çalışmanın ABD’de yapıldığı, en çok atıf alan ülkenin de ABD olduğu halde, Hollanda da yayın sayısı az olmasına rağmen yıllık alınan atıfın ABD’den daha fazla olduğu görülmüştür. Son olarak, konuya ait kullanılan kelimeler incelendiğinde en fazla “kalite” kelimesinin ortaya çıktığı görülmüştür.
Sonuçlar ve Öneriler: Tüm bulgular ışığında okul bağlılığı çalışan araştırmacılara hem araştırmalarına başlamadan önce hem araştırmacıya yol gösterecek dokümanların sunması hem de araştırmaya ait tüm süreçte eksiklerin görülmesi yönünden kaynaklık edecek bir çalışma niteliğindedir.
