Abstract

Editörlüğünü Greg Fisher’in yaptığı kitap, tarih, arkeoloji, filoloji gibi alanlarda uzman yirmi dört farklı yazarın doğrudan veya dolaylı katkısıyla hazırlanmıştır. Milâttan önce VIII. yüzyıl ile milâttan sonra VII. yüzyıl arasınaodaklanmış olan bu eser İslâm öncesi Arap toplumunu ve bu toplumun komşu olduğu imparatorluklarla ilişkisini anlamak üzere alandaki muhtelif yazarların çalışmalarından oluşan bir derlemedir. Bu çalışmada Doğu Roma (Bizans) devlet adamlarının, Yunan kâşiflerinin, İran imparatorlarının, menâkıbnâme (hagiography) ve kronik yazarlarının, Himyer krallarının ve zaman zaman da Araplar’ın yazdığı vesikalar gibi birincil kaynaklara dayanılmıştır.
