Osmanlı Arnavutlarının ABD’de Sosyal, Siyasi ve Ekonomik Faaliyetleri (1870-1912)

Abstract

Bu makale 1870 ve 1912 yılları arasında Osmanlı Arnavutlarının Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’ndeki sosyal, ekonomik ve siyasi faaliyetlerini incelemektedir. 19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren dünyanın pek çok bölgesinden insanlar çeşitli nedenlerle ABD’ye göç etmişlerdir. Osmanlı Arnavutları da başta ekonomik olmak üzere sosyal ve siyasi nedenlerle ABD’ye göç etmişlerdir. Bu çalışma, Osmanlı Arnavutlarının ABD’ye göç etme nedenlerini, Osmanlı yönetiminin bu duruma müdahalesini Osmanlı arşiv belgelerini de kullanarak ortaya çıkarmaya çalışmaktadır. Ayrıca Arnavutların ABD’deki kültürel organizasyonları, siyasi ve ekonomik faaliyetleri; göç komisyon raporları, arşiv belgeleri ve 1910-1920 nüfus sayımlarından elde edilen verilerle incelenmektedir. Bu makalede Osmanlı Arnavutlarının öncelikle ekonomik amaçlarla ABD’ye göç ettikleri daha sonra bir grup aydının mücadelesi sonucunda milli bir bilinç edindikleri iddia edilmektedir. Ayrıca Osmanlı yönetiminin de bu siyasi faaliyetlerden haber olduğu ve gelişmeleri dikkatle izlediği tespit edilmektedir.

Social Political and Economic Activities of Ottoman Albanians in the USA (1870-1912)

Abstract

This article examines the social, economic and political activities of Ottoman Albanians in the United States. From the late 19th century onwards, many people from different regions of the world emigrated to the USA. Ottoman Albanians also emigrated to the USA for social, political and predominantly economic motivations. This study highlights the reasons for the emigration of Ottoman Albanians to the USA and Ottoman administration’s attitude toward this process according to the evidence from Ottoman Archives. In addition, the cultural organizations, political and economic activities of Ottoman Albanians in the USA are examined through data obtained from Reports of the Immigration Commission, Ottoman Archive and 1910-1920 census records. In this article it is claimed that Ottoman Albanians emigrated to the USA primarily for economic purposes and then acquired national consciousness as a result of Albanian intellectuals’ social and political struggles. Additionally, it is revealed that the Ottoman administration was aware of these political activities and followed the developments attentively.
