Year 2025, Volume: 24 Issue: 53, 526 - 567, 29.09.2025

Abstract

Banknote images featuring handloom themes are representations of production or craft. In addition, they have a special place in terms of being part of both the cultural heritage and the ideological narrative of the nation-state. States that use representations such as traditional weaving on banknotes both legitimize a social order based on production and visualize nation-state ideologies. This study examines banknotes that have been in circulation in different countries of the world since the 19th century, and whose visual theme includes traditional handlooms. In this context, the images of handloom technologies on 11 banknotes belonging to six Asian countries are analyzed both descriptively and in terms of their connotations. By examining these visual examples, the types of looms on them are described, and with the support of documents related to the fabrics they produce and their areas of use, the role of banknotes as a documentation tool in determining the cultural, social and ideological structures of societies through the art of weaving is determined. This study aims to add a different dimension to the field of banknote research. When the relevant literature is examined, it is seen that there is no similar study that overlaps with the scope of this study. Panofsky's iconographic analysis method was used in the study. The results of the study show that the hand-looms in the banknote images can be interpreted as an important indicator of the socio-cultural and ideological structures of societies.

Dünya Banknotları Üzerinde El Dokuma Aletleri: Tezgâhlar

Year 2025, Volume: 24 Issue: 53, 526 - 567, 29.09.2025
https://doi.org/10.46928/iticusbe.1656000
