Calligrapher Sâmi Efendi in the Light of State Archives Documents

Abstract

Sami Efendi is a famous calligrapher who lived between 1838-1912. He served as a civil servant at a young age for 58 years, attracted the attention of people from all walks of life, and was praised both in the source works written and in the articles written. Calligrapher Sami Efendi wrote Mustafa Râkım in celi thuluth; He is a follower of Yesârîzâde Mustafa İzzet Efendi in celi ta'lik. Thanks to his superior ability and inexhaustible effort, the path of Râkım in celi thuluth; Sâmi Efendi, who became the most important representative of the Yesârîzâde way in celi ta'lik, with the students he trained, XX. century, with the same excellent attitude, and ensured that it reached the present day. The life, education, family, official duties and art of Sâmi Efendi, who influenced not only the calligraphers of his time, but also the artists who have survived and practiced the calligraphy profession, with the dozens of works he wrote, have attracted the attention of researchers. Sâmi Efendi, who trained hundreds of students, became one of the most important touchstones of calligraphy while he was still alive. In this study, unknown archival documents about the life of Sâmi Efendi, whose influence is still insurmountable in terms of calligraphy, are included. All of the 43 documents identified were examined and analyzed, and 30 documents deemed important were transcribed. In addition to the information about Sami Efendi's person and family, his civil service, the salaries he received over the years, the rank, medal and medals given to him were examined in the light of archival documents. Sami Efendi's duties and salaries, which are seen in confusion in the documents, are also given as a table to make it easier to understand. In the order of archival documents, close subjects were tried to be brought one after another, thus ensuring the integrity of the subject.
