A Research about Digital Identity Use of University Students and Self Presentation

Abstract

Online communication tools that have become widespread in recent years have brought along the habits of using digital identity. People increasingly use online communication tools for various reasons and create digital identities for these communication tools. Internet users use these tools for many purposes such as entertainment, service procurement, shopping, communication and education. Especially in social media tools used for entertainment and communication purposes, users can use effective impression creation tactics by hiding their real identities or showing them differently when creating their digital identities. Similar studies on the subject show that the age group with the highest rate of use of social media tools for this purpose is the younger generation over the age of 18. For this reason, our research was designed to examine the digital identity use tactics and effective impression creation strategies of university students over the age of 18. The research was carried out on university students studying at Erzincan Binali Yıldırım University. Considering the size of the population, the sample size was decided and a sample was created in which 408 university students were selected by convenience sampling method. The "Digital Identity Scale" and the "Altered Self Presentation Tactics Scale" were used in the study, for which reliability and validity studies were carried out before. The scales used are in the form of a 5-point Likert scale. The results obtained from the scales were analyzed by considering the variables of age, gender and income level. In addition, the social media tools preferred by the participants and the purpose of using these tools were made. The obtained data were analyzed in SPSS 20 package program. Since the data of the study showed normal distribution, t test and ANOVA test were used in the analysis phase. The findings obtained from the research revealed that there is a significant relationship between the purpose of using social media tools and the practices of developing digital identity and creating effective impressions.
