Lokman Hekim in the Context of Folk Songs

Abstract

From the moment they are born, humans interact with their surroundings. In this interaction, humans who want to express themselves often use music as a tool. One of the most important musical elements in Anatolia for expressing emotions is folk songs. Passed down from generation to generation, folk songs convey all the cultural elements of the culture they belong to through their lyrics and melodies. Therefore, Turkish folk music melodies, or folk songs, which play an important role in the formation of social identity, are also valuable in terms of social identity construction due to the traditional elements they carry. This study aims to examine the place and importance of Lokman Hekim, an important identity in Turkish culture, as well as its reflections in folk songs. The universe of this study consists of folk songs found in the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation's THM repertoire that mention the name “Lokman Hekim,” an important identity in Turkish folk culture, while the sample of the study consists of Kırık Hava folk songs that mention the name “Lokman Hekim.” A multi-faceted methodology was followed for this study; literature review, document analysis, and semi-structured interview questions were prepared, and interviews were conducted with expert sources in their fields. The study was conducted based on the hypothesis that in the Kırık Hava folk songs mentioning Lokman Hekim in the TRT repertoire, Lokman Hekim is mostly mentioned as a healer, that is, as a remedy for troubles. As a result, it was determined that Lokman Hekim, who exists as an identity in Turkish folk culture, is portrayed as a physician in addition to his wise personality, but his primary identity as a wise and knowledgeable figure is overshadowed. He is associated with physicians seeking immortality under different names in various cultures and is identified with Lokman Hekim in Turkish culture. Additionally, in the examined folk songs, it was found that Lokman Hekim, who is believed to have found a cure even for death, is generally referred to in the sense of “unable to find a cure, unable to heal.”
