The Family in the Process of Liquid Modernity: Structural Changes, Problems and the Possibilities of Religious Education
Abstract
The family is a fundamental social institution that shapes individuals’ identities through biological, psychological, social, and cultural influences. When examining the historical process, it is seen that the family institution is not a static structure; on the contrary, it undergoes constant change and transformation depending on the socio-economic, cultural and intellectual contexts in which it exists. Particularly with the influence of intellectual movements such as modernism and postmodernism, individualism and secularisation tendencies have strengthened; this situation has led to the redefinition of the traditional functions and roles of the family. In the process of liquid modernity conceptualised by Bauman, the fixed values associated with the family have become liquid, ceasing to be a safe haven for individuals when they need it. This study aims to analyse the historical transformation of the family institution and to identify the corrosive effects of the ‘fluid modernity’ phase on family structure. The structural and functional crises faced by the family as it breaks away from its traditional forms in the wake of modernisation constitute the central problem of this study. In this context, the opportunities offered by religious education and practical solutions to these problems and risks are discussed within an interdisciplinary academic framework. This study was designed as a qualitative case study within the framework of a qualitative research approach. The study discusses the role of religious education in the family institution, its intergenerational transmission and its functional role in the construction of shared values on a theoretical level, and presents practical recommendations based on a theoretical framework. The research findings reveal that religious education offers a meaningful, consistent, and profound frame of reference for individuals and society in the face of structural problems such as rapid social change, uncertainty, identity crisis, and loss of meaning produced by liquid modernity.
