Perceptions of University Students on the Negative Environmental Impact of Tourism: Case of Northern Cyprus
Abstract
In terms of sustainable development, the negative impact of the tourism as other sectors on the environment as well should be minimal. In this framework, perceptions of university students on the environmental impact of tourism in Northern Cyprus were measured. Fortunately, negative perception was not observed. However, the hesitant attitude towards water pollution, land use, vegetation and natural environmental damage is noteworthy. As a result of factor analysis, two factors as "environmental pollution" and "ecological balance disorder" by order of importance explaining the environmental impact of tourism were determined. According to the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Turkish students stated higher perceived environmental problems than foreign students except Turkish Cypriots. According to the multiple regression analysis, both factors were found to statistically explain the general environmental impact of tourism.
