Reflections of Tradition in Kaloghlan Tales
Abstract
Keloğlan tales taking place among the most beautiful examples of the
Turkish fairy tale include reflections of cultural peculiarities. Keloğlan with
his idiosyncratic naivete and the events he experienced are presented to the
readers together with folkloric motifs. In view of the model that was first put
forward by V. Propp and showed that tales have a universal structure and also
the set of frames, such as actants, narrative and content levels, narrative
schema and semiotic square, developed by Greimas, the structure of the tale
called 'Keloğlan with Ogres' is examined. Taking into account the events that
develop around the actants, the development of the tale is analysed through
cross-sectioning. In addition, the
attention is drawn to the fact that the traditional structure in tales can be
investigated and systematically analysed through modern techniques.
