Anti Hero in Postmodern Cinema: Analysis of Quentin Tarantino Films
Abstract
Cinema art, which developed under the dominance of modern and classical narrative forms, started to acquire different elements and new notions after 1980 with the effect of postmodern approach. Many approaches such as parody, pastiche, irony, fragmentation, hybridization are the terms postmodernism brings to the cinema. In addition to these approaches, new notions are emerging in postmodern cinema. "Anti hero" comes to the fore at the beginning of these notions. The notion of heroine, stereotyped by classical cinema, takes a different meaning in postmodern understanding and takes place in the narrative structure in which positive and negative features can be combined in a single character. Quentin Tarantino, known to adopt the postmodern approach, creates them closer to the real world, rather than describing the characters in his films as black or white. The fact that the characters in the director's films show an attitude far from the ideal hero type contributes to the work. In this context, the films of Tarantino are analyzed and the characters representing the anti-hero notion created by the postmodern approach are analyzed in this study. In the study structured in qualitative research design, the method of phenomenology is preferred. The characters in Tarantino's films have a different framework for both narrative and postmodern approach, with anti-hero features.
