Healers in Anatolia and Their Treatment Methods within the Scope of Traditional Treatment Practices

Abstract

Although modern medicine is advanced today, it could be seen that traditional treatment practices continue to find place in daily life in terms of protecting health and treating diseases. As for the sick people, their efforts to use every possible way to protect and restore their health and cope with diseases are quite understandable. In this context, it is also quite understandable why some traditional treatment practices that existed before modern medical practices still exist today. Some of these practices are used under the name of complementary medicine with modern medicine and by practitioners of modern medicine. Some of these applications are continued passing from generation to generation with traditional methods, but it is not considered worthy of applying by practitioners of modern medicine. Some of the applications have disappeared gradually in history because there is no practitioner or demand.
In this study, traditional healers, which has an important place in traditional treatment practices, have been discussed through certain examples. Examples of the treatment methods used by the examined healers were given, and these methods were also evaluated in terms of conventional medicine and religious beliefs. In addition, traditional healers were evaluated in terms of cultural change and the social reflections of the practices were discussed.
Research findings have shown that traditional treatment methods can be categorized under 3 main groups: The treatment methods that bearing the traces of the pre-Islamic period, the treatment methods that bear the traces of the pre-Islamic period but also include motifs of the Islamic religion, and finally, the treatment methods that do not contain elements contrary to the basic principles of the Islamic belief and reflect totally the Islamic culture. The explanations about the category of the used healing methods was made in the relevant sections.
