Sosyal Dünyanın Metodolojik İzdüşümleri Arasında Bir Karşılaşmanın Anatomisi: Comte ve Mill’in Nedensellik Tartışması

Abstract

Auguste Comte ve John Stuart Mill, sosyal dünyanın incelenmesine dair kapsamlı metodolojik fikirler ortaya koymuş etkili isimlerdir. Comte ve Mill bir dönem diyalog içinde olmuş, karşılıklı eleştiri ve önerilerle birbirlerine katkı sunmuşlardır. Sosyolojinin toplumsal fenomenlerden hareketle toplumsal yasaları oluşturma düşüncesi, Comte kadar Mill’in de gündeminde yer almıştır. Ancak Mill, Comte’un sosyoloji projesini psikoloji ve etoloji gibi bilimlerle genişletme teşebbüsünde bulunmuştur. Bu minvalde Comte ve Mill bilimsel açıklamanın temel mahiyetleri arasında yer alan nedensellik konusunda, kimi yönlerden birbirinden farklılaşan değerlendirmelere başvurmuşlardır. Sosyal dünyanın bilimsel incelenmesine yönelik natüralist bir tutum her ikisinin çalışmalarına hâkim olmuşsa da, insan davranışlarını açıklama ve nedenlerini ortaya çıkarma noktasında projelerini farklı argümanlarla tamamlamayı tercih etmişlerdir. Mill, Comte’un pozitif bilim projesine oldukça ilgiyle yaklaşmışken, sosyolojinin bu piramide dahil edilme tarzının ve ona biçilen rolün tüm bir pozitif bilim sistemini tehlikeye attığı kanaatinde olmuştur. Düşünürler arasında 1840’ların başında başlayan mektuplaşmalar, Mill’in Comte’un sistemini iyileştirmeye yönelik pek çok önerisini gözler önüne sermektedir. Temelde Mill, sosyolojik bir nedensel açıklamanın gerçekten mevcut olabilmesi için, bireyi farklı nitelikleriyle izah etmeye çalışan sair sosyal disiplinlerden de yararlanması gerektiği inancındadır. Bu nedenle, makalede, Comte ve Mill karşılaşmasının verimli entelektüel dinamiklerini sergilemek adına onların nedensellik konusunda birbiriyle ayrışan ve örtüşen yönlerinin neler olduğu ele alınmıştır. Comte ve Mill pek çok farklı kavram veya tema ışığında irdelenebilir. Lakin nedensellik konusundaki argümantasyonun her iki isim arasında cereyan eden temasın ne gibi sonuçlar yarattığını ölçmede daha verimli bir kavrayış sunabileceği söylenebilir. Bu anlamda, makalede, Comte ve Mill’in nedensellik kavrayışlarının sergilenmesi, her iki entelektüel ufkun nedensellik analizi üzerinden karşılaştırılması ve her bir düşünürün bir diğeri aracılığıyla anlaşılmasına katkı sunan unsurların gösterilmesi amaçlanmaktadır.

The Anatomy of an Encounter Between Methodological Projections of the Social World: Comte and Mill’s Causality Debate

Abstract

Auguste Comte and John Stuart Mill are influential figures who introduced comprehensive methodological ideas regarding the study of the social world. Comte and Mill were in dialogue for a while and contributed to each other with mutual criticism and suggestions. The idea of sociology to create social laws based on social phenomena was on the agenda of Mill as well as Comte. However, Mill attempted to expand Comte’s sociology project with sciences such as psychology and ethology. In this regard, Comte and Mill resorted to evaluations that differ from each other in some respects regarding causality, which is among the basic characteristics of scientific explanation. Although a naturalistic attitude towards the scientific examination of the social world dominated the works of both of them, they preferred to complete their projects with different arguments in explaining human behavior and revealing its causes. While Mill was very interested in Comte's positive science project, he thought that the way sociology was included in this pyramid and the role assigned to it endangered the entire positive science system. The correspondence between thinkers that began in the early 1840s reveals many of Mill's suggestions for improving Comte's system. Essentially, Mill believed that in order for a sociological causal explanation to truly exist, it should also benefit from other social disciplines that try to explain the individual with its different qualities. For this reason, in the article, in order to display the productive intellectual dynamics of the encounter between Comte and Mill, their differing and overlapping aspects regarding causality are discussed. Comte and Mill can be examined in the light of many different concepts or themes. However, it can be said that the argumentation about causality can provide a more productive understanding in measuring what kind of results the contact between the two names creates. In this sense, the article aims to firstly display Comte and Mill's conceptions of causality, then compare both intellectual horizons through causality analysis, and finally show the elements that contribute to the understanding of each thinker through the other.
