On Basic Principles of Musical Education in Plato: Skhēma and Ēthos

Abstract

In the Symposium, Phaedrus and Republic it is claimed that
the education of cha-racter begins by means of sensibility. However an
interpretation of character edu-cation that is grounded solely on the sensible
aspect of music, i.e. skhēma, suffers from an inconsistency with certain
Platonic metaphysical presuppositions and thus is in need of a principle that
is superior in terms of being. This superior principle, i.e. character (ēthos),
can be supplied by Republic III where an analysis of musical structure is
given. There is indeed a kind of music which is true and appreciated by Plato
and it is grounded not on skhēma, as is the case with music through mimēsis,
but on good character (euētheia). True music that stems from ēthos is the one
that has to be utilized in the character education of the young. In the
Platonic musical education, the main and determining factor is the good
character and moderate soulof the music teacher, although the love of the music
student as well as the charm of music in terms of skhēma are prerequisites.

Platon’da Müzikal Eğitimin Temel Ögelerine Dair: Skhēma ve Ēthos

Abstract

Sempozyum, Phaidros ve Devlet diyalogları, karakter
eğitiminin duyusal yollarla başladığına işaret eder. Ancak müziğin yalnızca
duyusal yönüne, skhēma’ya dayanan bir karakter eğitimi yorumu, bazı temel
Platoncu metafizik kabullerle uyuşmamakta, skhēma’dan varlıksal olarak daha
üstün bir ilkeye ihtiyaç duymaktadır. Bu üstün ilke, yani karakter (ēthos),
Devlet’in 3. kitabında verilen müziğin ögelerine dair analiz sa-yesinde temin
edilebilir. Platon’un değerli bulduğu, hakiki bir müzik türü vardır ve bu da
mimēsis usulüne dayanan müzikten farklı olarak skhēma’ya değil, iyi karaktere
(euētheia) dayanır. Ēthos temelli hakiki müzik, gençlerin karakter eğitiminde
esas kul-lanılması gereken müziktir. Platoncu müzikal eğitimde esas olarak,
müzik öğretme-nin iyi karakteri ve ölçülülüğü rol oynar; ancak müzik
öğrencisinin aşkı ve müziğin skhēma açısından çekici olması da zorunludur.
