In 1869 the tale “The Italian Army During the Cholera of 1867” was
published in the storybook “The Military Life”. This story-reportage is
commonly considered the first real reportage of Edmondo De Amicis. The
scene of this reportage is Sicily affected by a terrible cholera epidemic.
Forty years later and two years before his death De Amcis came back to
Sicily and he found a different situation. Now he’s not a soldier of Italian
government but a very famous writer with a long and various literary
experience. De Amicis in his last travelogue “Memory of a Travel in
Sicily”made a sentimental description of this experience bringing also
together elements like the wonder for the island’s beauty and the sadness
for his lost youth and the feeling of coming death.
These two texts give an interesting clue of the study of de Amicis’ writing,
his linguistic and literary evolution. Moreover, with this comparison it’s
possible to notice the changes and the permanences in De Amicis’ thoughts.
