Abstract

Alexander Russell (Edinburgh 1714–Londra 1768) ve Patrick Russell (Edinburgh 1727 – Londra 1805) Osmanlı döneminde Halep’te uzun sürelerle görev yapmış iki kardeş hekimdir. Mesleki çalışmalarının çerçevelediği, The Natural History of Aleppo başlığını taşıyan gözlemleri ‘doğal tarih’ çalışmaları için birincil kaynak niteliğindedir. Leiden Üniversitesi’nden Maurits H. van den Boogert, yapıtın ayrı kitaplar sayılabilecek 1756 ve 1794 baskılarını, 1 yeniden okuyarak değerlendirirken amacını: yazarların formasyonları ile gözlem yöntemlerini anlamak, toplumsal yaşam konusundaki görüşlerini tartışmak ve kitaplarının tıp ve doğa bilimleri bakımından tarihsel değerini ortaya koymak, olarak açıklamaktadır.
