La Revue Médico-pharmaceutique and the transmission of medical knowledge to Turkey: A survey for the year 1888
Abstract
Although the medical schools created by the Ottoman government played
an important role in the introduction of European medical knowledge to the
Ottoman Empire, the individualistic initiatives should not be ignored. Medical
journals published in various languages in various cities of the empire, helped
the transmission of novelties in medicine from European literature. About 15
medical journals in French saw the press in Turkey during the second half of the
19th century and early 20th century. Among them, La Revue médicopharmaceutique edited and published by the French pharmacist Pierre Apéry
(1852-1918) in Istanbul was a long-lasting journal with its 27 volumes dating
from 1888 to 1914. By examining the first volume of the journal, the present
work aims to expose the medical and pharmaceutical knowledge transmitted
through the excerpts, articles and news borrowed to European sources and the
peculiarities of the transmission.
