Aylık Türkçe Bilim Dergisi Mecmua-i Fünun

Abstract

This text is the Turkish translation of “Die türkische wissenschaftliche Monatsschrift Medschmuai Fünun” published in the Austrian journal Oesterreichische Wochenschrift für Wissenschaft, Kunst und öffentliches Leben in 1863. It reviews the monthly Turkish scientific journal entitled Mecmua-i Fünun (Journal of Sciences), which commenced publication in 1862 in Istanbul by the Cemiyet-i İlmiye-i Osmaniye (The Ottoman Society for Science). The journal which aims to address a large readership includes articles on current political issues, as well as popular scientific articles. The article published in Vienna introduces the bylaws of the Society, and reviews some of the articles published in Mecmua-i Fünun, and emphasizes the significance of its publication in the modernization movement of the Ottoman society.
