Abstract

Sayın Osmanlı Bilimi Araştırmaları Dergisi Editörü, Bu yazıda, 1893 yılında Osmanlı Sultanı II. Abdülhamid’in (1842-1918) devam eden hediye alışverişinin parçası olarak Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'ne göndermiş olduğu (bir diğeri de aynı tarihlerde Birleşik Krallık'a gönderilmiştir) albüm seti üzerinden dönemin tıp ve özellikle anatomi eğitim materyallerine yansımalarını analiz edeceğiz.¹ Albümlerin gönderilme amacı, Amerikan ve İngiliz halkına modern imparatorluk yaşamının fotoğraflar üzerinden tanıtmaktır. Ancak kaynaklar bu hedefin hiçbir zaman gerçekleşmediğini belirtmektedir.² Her sette elli bir cilt bulunan albümler malesef o dönem yayınlanmamıştır. Bu nedenle, Osmanlı modernleşmesini ve endüstriyel ilerlemesini duyurmaya yönelik girişim başarısız olmuştur. Bu albümler yıllarca Washington DC'de bulunan Kongre Kütüphanesinin Doğu Koleksiyonu'nda (Orientalia Division) kalmış ve 1945 yılına kadar Baskılar ve Fotoğraflar Bölümü'ne aktarılmamıştır.² Albümlerin üzerinde çalışma yapılması ve sonrasında tamamen dijitalleştirilmesi çok daha ileri tarihlerde mümkün olmuştur
