IS ENTREPRENEURSHIP AN INSTRUMENT OF SOCIAL MOBILITY FOR WOMEN?: AN ASSESSMENT OF WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS IN ESKISEHIR
Abstract
The concept of entrepreneurship has been regarded as a key factor in economic development because it serves functions such as preventing unemployment, increasing productivity, and evoking the potential of idle resources. In addition to this, entrepreneurship has some social functions such as activating social mobility. Entrepreneurship has been supported in recent years and the concept of entrepreneurship, especially of female entrepreneurship, has arrested the attention of social scientists. Projects to support women entrepreneurs aim empowering women and ensuring gender equality (Ecevit, 2007). But these supporting mechanisms assume women entrepreneurs as a homogeneous group and ignore their socio-economic status. In this context this study aims to demonstrate there is a direct relationship between entrepreneurial experience of women and their socio-economic status. Findings of this study based on fieldwork carried out on 63 women formally affiliated to Chamber of Small Tradesman and Craftsmen in Eskişehir. The study includes both objective conditions of women and individuals perceptions of women’s social status.
