The Experiences Of Violence-Victim Women After Leaving A Shelter

Abstract

This article aims to investigate the life experiences of victims of violence after they leave
a women’s shelter. It also aims to examine how living in these shelters helps create new,
violence-free lives for these women. This study employed qualitative research and held
semi-structured interviews with 10 women who left two different shelters. These shelters
were operated by local administrations of one of the metropolitan cities of Turkey. Using
theoretical sample technique, we conducted interviews at 0–12 months after the participants’
departure. Most interviewees stated that they left the shelter with such feelings as sadness,
fear, and anxiety. Although those women avoided voicing their shelter experiences in their
social lives, in private, they continued to be friends with those they have met in the shelter.
Two conclusions can be drawn. First, the biggest contribution of these shelters is that they
imbue women with a sense of confidence and provide them the opportunity to have a new
life. However, the major constraint of living in a shelter life is that the women are deprived
of much needed economic support to begin their lives anew.
