Sosyoloji of Alternative Modernitıes and Türkiye

Abstract

The concept of “alternative modernity” is one of the most popular topics in modern
Sociology. The concept of modernism first emerged in the 1770, a time when historicism
occurred in the West for the first time. Having acquired its essence and significance in
Western history, “modernity” has been defined in relation to the industrial and capitalist
world economy. Nowadays, the concept of “modernism” and its applications are under
scrutiny. At present, modernity has been pluralized, with each component having its own
set of problems. The concept has been expanded in different ways outside the West and
is now called non-Western modernity. In this new concept, Islam is used both as a core
idea and field of application. This is a concept that emerged in the Western society as a
result of radical political, social, economic, and ethical values and is now expanded into
Chinese, Islamic, African, and Turkish “modernities.” Meanwhile, the American notion of
modernity was adapted from Europe. The risk theory proposed by the German sociologist
Ulrich Beck is another example of alternative modernity. Some well-known examples
include the modernizations of Eastern Asia (known as the “late modernities”) and Soviet
socialism. These are not colonized examples but are also called “multiple modernities.”
As for Turkey, which has often been considered as a bridge between the East and the
West, particularly between the Islamic East and Christian West, its notion of multiple
modernities has also been undoubtedly adopted from the West. Indeed, modern day Turkey
is a country not of democracy, but of capitalism. Hence, it is about to lose its experience
of modernism. According to Beck, basic transformation that affirms new modernity is
passing from industrial into a “risk society.” Ultimately, modernity is being criticized, but
it is still influential within academic circles.
