Abstract

THE GEOLOGY OF YAHYALI REGIONS (KAYSERI) IN THE
ALADAG MOUNTAINS

The investigated area around Yahyah (Kayseri province) is 450 kilometer square. In this area, there are Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and Senozoic formations. The oldest formation of Palaeozoic is Predevonian Yahyah Metamorphic Compleix
contain nonfossiliferous metapelitic rocks, metasandstones, marbles and mylonitic rocks. Yahyalı Metamorphic Compleix is trru1sgressively overlain by the c;a1mard1 Formation
(Devonian) which is made of limestone and shale, intercalated with orthoquartzite, comprising Brachiopodas, Corals and Algaes. Altca§ar formation (Carboniferous) lies on the c;almardi Formation (Devonian) with comformity and is made of limestone, shale and quartzite beds, containing Foraminiferas, Corals, Brachiopodas and Algaes.
The Carboniferous form.'l.tion is comformable "Nith the Akba§ formation (Permian), made of limestone, orthoquartzite lenses, and has Foraminifera, Corals, Brachiopodas
and Algaes. There is a comformity between the Akba§ Formation (Pennian) and Kavak Formation
(Triassic). The beds of Kavak Formation are marl, shale and limestones having Gastropodas and Pelecypodas.
The Triassic Kavak formation is discomformably overliain by the Ayvan Formation (Upper Cretaceous) which is mostly made of limestone and rare, thin chert lenses. The fossils in the Ayvan Formation are Globotruncana and Radiolaria.
The Miocene Zebil Formation overlies the Ayvan Formation (Upper Cretaceous) with angular unconformity and is discomformably overlain by the Pliocene Goknlik Formation which consists of tuff, agglomerate and basalt. Quaternary accumulations are travertine and alluvium, >which are called Bekta§keleri formation. In the area, the plutonic rocks are Upper Cretaceous in age and, the volcanites arc Miocene, Pliocene and Quaternary. In the region, the metamorphic and sedimentary formations were folded by the phases of Caledonian, Hercynian and Alpine orogenies.
