Age, Growth and Feeding Characteristics of brown comber (Serranus hepatus Linnaeus, 1758) Distribution in Izmir Bay

Abstract

In this study, some biological features of brown comber Serranus hepatus L.,1758 were investigated from İzmir Bay. 1062 specimens were captured by R/V Egesuf by bottom trawl net between January-April 2005. It is determined that the samples of population distributed between 0-III age groups. Minimum, maximum and mean total length were determined as 6.0, 11.6 and 9.51± 0,71 cm, respectively. Minimum, maximum and mean weights were determined as 3.71, 25.49 and 13.04 ± 2,85 g, respectively. The length-weight relationship was determined as W=0.0182*L2.91, r= 0.94. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were calculated as Lt = 12.52 * [1-e-0.435 (t+1.194)] and Wt= 39.80 * [1-e-0.135 (t+1.035)]2.91 for all specimens. Stomach contents of the species were examined to reveal general feeding habits, and the main preys were found as decapod crustaceans.
