GC-MS Profiling of Bioactive Components in Citronella and Castor Oil: Implications for Sustainable Insecticide Development

Abstract

This study explored the potential of citronella and castor oils as plant-based insecticides. While these oils have been used in pest control, knowledge of their bioactive compounds and effectiveness remains limited. Given the growing demand for eco-friendly agricultural solutions, this study aims to identify and analyze the active compounds in both oils and evaluate their insecticidal potential. The main objective is to clarify the potential of citronella oil and kepyar castor oil for pest control. For this study, citronella and kepyar castor seeds were macerated to extract the oils. Then, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis was conducted to identify and quantify bioactive compounds based on the chromatogram peaks and mass spectra produced. The results showed that citronella oil contains citronellal and other effective compounds, while kepyar castor oil contains ethyl ether and ricinoleic acid, which also have potential. Further exploration of the mixture of these two oils and its impact on pest control is suggested. Future research could examine the interactions between the compounds and their application on a large scale.
