Factors Influencing Quality of Life among Older Adults in Residential Care Facilities in Kathmandu

Abstract

Quality of life is the individual's perception of their own life and is influenced by various factors. There is no universal definition of quality of life, but WHO defines it as an individual's perspective of their position in life relative to their goals, expectations, standards, and concerns. This study aims to identify factors that affect the quality of life of elderly individuals residing in nursing homes in the Kathmandu district and their impact. The study used a cross-sectional research design and collected primary data from 172 elderly residents from nine nursing homes in the Kathmandu district. The quality of life was categorized into three categories. The proportional odds model of ordinal logistic regression was used to find the impact of significant explanatory variables on the quality of life. Of the total, 56.98% had fair QoL, while 19.18% had high QoL. The study found that the type of nursing home, satisfaction with food and accommodation, satisfaction with the internal environment, and visits from relatives significantly influenced the QoL of older adults.
