A Crew Resource Management (CRM) Challenge: An Analysis of Captains' Cockpit Communication Management for the Enhancement of Flight Safety

Abstract

Flight operations consist of the duties performed by both cabin and cockpit crew members. The primary objective of flight operations is to fly the passengers and cargo safely to their planned destinations. This basic objective requires effective and productive communication among all members of the flight crew. Communication in aviation is way too different from the communication in other instutions and professional frameworks. Given that flight operations are highly dynamic, incessantly evolving, and conducted 7/24 basis, the communication environment during flight must minimize complexity and eliminate misunderstandings. Therefore, one of the most critical aspects of aviation communication is maintaining standardized and disciplined communication throughout all cockpit operations. This research study was conducted to identify communication-related mishaps and challenges within the cockpit, analyze captains' and First Officer’s perspectives on potential solutions, with respect to cultural, generational and general aspects, and develop recommendations serving at maximizing safety and enhance optimization in flight operations. Data is collected by using a researcher-developed questionnaire then statistical validation and reliability tests are conducted to prove the viable findings. The resulting recommendations are intended to provide applicable guidance for relevant actors in the aviation industry. The primary objective of this study is to propose some means to minimize communication-related issues within the cockpit by means of the principles of Crew Resource Management (CRM), thereby contributing to the highest level of safety in flight operations.
