Abstract

Wernicke Encephalopathy After Long-Term Total Parenteral Nutrition: A Case Report

Year 2011, , 26 - 28, 01.01.2011

Abstract

Wernicke’s encephalopathy is an acute neurologic conditi- on due to thiamine deficiency. It is characterized by ataxia, ophtalmoplegia and mental confusion. Wernicke’s encep- halopathy is usually associated with alcoholism and severe malnutrition, moreover it can also be seen with prolonged total parenteral nutrition. In this article, a pediatric case with a Wernicke encephalopathy who responded to thiamin medication was reported. She had tachycardia, horizontal nystagmus, ataxia and confusion due to long term parente- ral nutrition without thiamin support after abdominal sur- gery
