Investigation of the Allelopathic Effect of Juglone and Walnut Leaf Extract on Weeds (Cynodon dactylon, Convolvulus arvensis, and Cirsium arvense) in Apricot orchards

Abstract

In this study, commercially purchased juglone and dried walnut leaf extracts were used to investigate the allelopathic effect of Cynodon dactylon, Convolvulus arvensis, and Cirsium arvense species commonly found in apricot orchards. A 10⁻³ M juglone liqour was prepared by melting juglone in autoclaved water. Under tissue culture conditions, seeds were placed on MS medium such as juglone or walnut leaf extract, while in vivo tests were performed in pots. Seed germination, root and shoot length, and dry weight were measured to determine allelopathic effects. Juglone and walnut leaf extract partly blocked germination and root development in tissue culture conditions, while this effect was restricted in ex- vitro conditions. The most pronounced inhibition was detected in the root growth of Convolvulus arvensis. These outcomes recommended that juglone and walnut leaf extract have potential as environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional herbicides.
