A review regarding the content, usage areas, morphology, medicinal benefits of the medlar (Mespilus germanica L.)

Year 2025, Volume: 1 Issue: 1, 31 - 36, 25.07.2025

Abstract

In recent years, Medlar (Mespilus germanica L.) has drawn the attention of researchers because of its rich chemical content and medicinal usage. Medlar, is a belonging to the family Rosaceae, is an ancient plant of southwestern Asia, southeastern Europe, and Anatolia. Medlar is used for the purpose of medicinal usage; for example, the extract from the bark of the medlar tree can be used as a diuretic and has also been used to treat colon infections, diarrhea, and internal bleeding. In their studies, researchers have determined that medlar contains natural antioxidants preventing cancer. Also, when compared to other fruits, it contains a lot of vitamins and minerals that are necessary for human health. Medlar also contains pectin that has human health-promoting benefits. The aim of this research is to review the studies that include the contents, usage areas, morphology, medicinal benefits of the medlar, and potential workability of the medlar, and to disclose what kind of studies have been done about medlar so far.
