Development of ability of the Managing Patient Expectation Scale: a validity and reliability study

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of the present study was developing a scale that can be used for measuring physiotherapists’ ability to manage patient expectations.

Methods: Construct validity of Ability of Managing Patient Expectations Scale (AMPES) was investigated by principal component analysis and confirmatory factor analysis on 286 physiotherapists (PTs) sample, test - retest reliability was investigated on 50 PTs and concurrent validity was investigated using Communication Skills Scale (CSS) on 45 PTs.

Results: It was seen that AMPES consists of nine items and extracts 49.46% of the total variance. The results of confirmatory factor analysis showed that model - data fit is achieved. There were significant correlations between AMPES and CSS, ranging from 0.33 to 0.57. Reliability coefficients vary between 0.53-0.96.

Conclusion: AMPES has satisfactory psychometric properties for measuring the physiotherapists’ ability of managing patient expectations.

Hasta beklentilerini yönetme becerisi ölçeğinin geliştirilmesi: geçerlik ve güvenirlik çalışması

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, fizyoterapistlerin hasta beklentilerini yönetme becerilerini belirlemek üzere kullanılabilecek Hasta Beklentilerini Yönetme Becerisi Ölçeği’ni (HBYBÖ) geliştirmekti.

Yöntem: Geliştirilen ölçeğin yapı geçerliği, 286 kişilik veri faktör analitik tekniklerle; test - tekrar test güvenirliği 50 kişilik veriden; uyum geçerliği ise İletişim Becerileri Ölçeği (İBÖ) kullanılarak 45 fizyoterapistten elde edilen verilerden korelasyon analizi ile incelendi.

Bulgular: Analizler sonucunda, dokuz maddeden oluşan HBYBÖ’nün, toplam varyansın % 49.46’sını açıklayan iki faktörlü yapıya sahip olduğu görüldü. Doğrulayıcı faktör analizi sonuçları model - veri uyumunun sağlandığı gösterdi. HBYBÖ ve İBÖ puanları arasında 0.33-0.57 arasında değişen korelasyonların bulunduğu görüldü. Güvenirlik katsayıları 0.53-0.96 arasında değişmekteydi.

Sonuç: HBYBÖ’nün, fizyoterapistlerin hasta beklentilerini yönetme becerilerini ölçmede yeterli geçerlik ve güvenirliğe sahip olduğu görüldü.
